Areas of attention in the nomination
Everyone can nominate someone else! The nomination for conferral of a decoration to a person living in the Netherlands must be submitted in writing to the mayor of the town where the candidate lives. There is a special form for this, on which the required information can be entered (see 'publications').

In addition to general personal information, there are questions about the candidate's work and position. If the person being nominated is employed, a statement from their employer must be included showing that the employer has no objection to the conferral of a Royal honour.

This prevents the conferral of a decoration in cases where certain facts occur or have occurred in the main position that could be reason no to confer a decoration.

Finally, the relationship between the nominator and the candidate is important.

Motivation

The motivation is the most important part of the nomination. It must specify the candidate's special merits and why they are special.
First of all, the motivation must include a list of the candidate's various activities. Indicating the period in which the candidate was active is also recommended, as well as specifying for each merit the amount of time that each activity requires or required.

Timely submission

It is very important that the nomination is submitted on time. If the intention is to confer the decoration in the Birthday Honours on the occasion of Queen's Day, then the nomination should be submitted to the mayor before 1 July of the preceding year. If the nominator is pursuing conferral of the decoration at another occasion, then it is recommended that the nomination is submitted at least six months in advance.

The period of consideration can only be deviated from in exceptional cases, such as severe illness of the candidate. In that case, it is recommended that a statement by the doctor in attendance is included with the nomination.

It is a good idea to consult in advance with the mayor or the officer of his cabinet who handles decoration nominations. He or she can indicate whether a nomination has a chance of being honoured.
