The history of the Dutch honours system can be divided into three periods:
- The period before 1815, including medieval orders of knights and the precursors of the current merit orders;
- the period 1815-1994, in which the three current orders were created and preparations were made for the revision of the honours system;
- the period from 1994, which starts with the revision of the honours system.
