Main points of the revision
  • Democratisation of the system
  • An even distribution of honours over all layers of the population
  • A contemporary and clear interpretation of the term special merits in both Orders
  • More appreciation of women, voluntary work and minorities
  • Abolition of most automatic conferrals
  • Disconnecting social status and the grade of the honour
  • Disentanglement of the Order of the Lion of the Netherlands and the Order of Orange-Nassau.
  • No more conferral of Honorary medals related to the Order of Orange-Nassau or the Brother medal related to the Order of the Netherlands Lion
  • A new grade of decoration: Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau
  • Determining and publishing the so-called Rules of Procedures, containing the verification criteria, the description of the decorations and the procedure
  • Setting up a Civil Honours Advisory Commission that is responsible for national verification and that implements and maintains the revised system on the basis of the Rules of Procedure
